Help me to understand

Is there someone who can help me to understand my results as I just seem to go round in circles here - tests are done but I do not seem to find someone who explains to me what the results actually mean.

Told that I have Hashimoto but do not understand my levels at the moment

My Antithyroglobulin is 87.0 reference range <4.1
Anit thryoid Peroxidase is 0.7 range 0 - 11.0
Neturophils 2.24 range 2.00-7.50
Lymphocytes 1.54 ref range 1.50-4.00

TSH - 4th Generation 1.1265 m/u/L ref range 0.350 - 4.940 is this OK?
Free T4 17.6 range 9.0 - 19.1 is this too high or OK - I seem to feel better at this level
Free T 3 3.71 - ref range 2.63 - 5.70 is this on the low side?

Cholesterol Total 6.15 range upto 5.20 told this is too high
Cholesterol HDL 2.63 range 1.17 - 2.50 told this is tooo high

Interpreting thyroid function tests requires more than a review of the numbers. Based on the levels you report it appears you do have Hashimoto's. The other numbers appear in the range of normal, but here is where proper interpretation requires more information.

As you know I can't provide medical advice via this forum but I can make some general comments. If a person has Hashimoto's and an enlarged thyroid (goiter) this may indicate the thyroid is struggling to keep up with demand for thyroid hormone. If the enlarged thyroid is causing symptoms like difficulty swallowing or fullness in the neck, then treatment with thyroid hormone to reduce the size may be needed even if TSH is still in the normal range.

As I have pointed out in previous blogs, finding the right TSH level is somewhat like finding the right shoe size. We know that although a particular size shoe (size 7, for example) is a normal shoe size, not everyone with a normal foot wears a size 7 shoe. Some of us are size 5 and some size 11 etc. Therefore, if a thyroid is diseased the TSH may appear in the normal range, but not be appropriate for the particular person.

My reply should raise questions for you but I hope you have a better perspective so when you ask your doctor questions, you will be more likely to get a response that could be helpful.

Dear Dr Pepper

Thanks soooo much for your reply - I am in Hong Kong where treatment is based on TSH levels and making using of T4 medication. The problem I face is exactly finding someone who can interpret the information given the fact that doctors do not accept the T3 supplementation route and T3 can not even be purchased in Hong Kong.

It is hard work and not really acceptable for someone to try and educate their dr on their health issue - but will continue to do so and perhaps there may be light at the end of the tunnel.

I have gone as far as finding Cytomel myself and dropping my T4 supplement to include the Cytomel T3 and now on day two. The neck/shoulder pains, hoarse voice and severe edema is the most frustrating.

I have a choice to complain or take resonsibility for my own health and to become an advocate for that and when the change is there can go back to the medical professionals here and be a living example to hopefully pave the way for others in the future.

I learn a lot form this site coupled with others.

Thank you for the wonderful work you do and thanks to many who post here as it enhances our learning. Each persons post is like learning from the university of life.

Hi Liya-Elize. Let me chime in with a quick comment. In view of the diagnosis of Hashimotos', be sure to get more information from your healthcare practitioner about nutrition intervention. It is recommended that someone with Hashimoto's avoid iodine, gluten and possibly supplements that may upregulate your immune system.. either TH1 stimulants or TH2 stimulants depending on your individual reactions. I refer you to a book with this information called "Why Do I Still Have Thyroid Symptoms? When My Lab Tests are Normal?" by Dr. Datis Kharrazian. I have attended his continuing education seminars on Functional Blood Chemistry Analysis and Functional Endocrinology. He is an excellent teacher and clinician.

Just three days ago my healthcare practitioner and I worked through a number of clinical books looking at the T levels inclusive of T1 and T2 and will discuss the above with him. I am going to enjoy working through the information you sent and will keep you posted. I do not make use of Iodine, avoid all forms of gluten, avoid raw foods due to the moldy enviornments of Hong Kong Candida is often a problem, even fruit if I can not peal it, I do not eat it. Eat only low glyvemic carbs, organic food, and introduced coconut oil about 10 days ago - now on 4 tablespoons a day and find that the constipation is less and overall feel much better. I was looking for a natural way to beat Candida. I also create a mold free smelly home by placing bowls of vinegar around the house, here in Asia people often use bowls of iodine instead of the vinegar. Care needs to be taken that the vinegar is a brand that does not contain sugar.
