Hi Anna

I like the way you think. You have done your research and your facts are pretty good. What is important to remember however is that what you are quoting are the average amounts of the various hormones in humans which cannot be applied to individuals. (The ratios in Armour are standardized and are more or less constant). I like to use the analogy of shoe sizes. The average shoe size may be size 7 but that doesn't mean everyone with a normal foot can fit in a size 7 shoe. My thyroid may produce a very different amount of thyroid hormone in different ratio's then your thyroid but both of us are normal. Do you see the point? The situation becomes even more tricky when the thyroid is not working properly.
Finding the proper dosage for thyroid replacement is harder than just treating the averages. Also I disagree that everyone converts T4 to T3 at the same rate or with the same efficiency and there is recent research to explain that.

In my book Metabolism.com I devote a lot of time explaining my philosophy and approach to these issues. Have a look!http://www.metabolism.com/shop/metabolism-book

Thanks and I hope this helps.

Dear Dr. Pepper,

I have read several times that pigs produce less T4 and more T3 than humans do, so that patients taking Armour and other desiccated thyroid meds end up having low free T4 and high free T3 levels. I recall seeing the figures 5%T3-95%T4 in humans as opposed to 20%T3-80%T4 in pigs. It was also stated that T4 to T3 conversion is normal in hypothyroid patients.

So my question is: why aren't all patients on NTH put on a combination of NTH and thyroxine, to duplicate what a healthy thyroid would be doing?

I read recently that a healthy thyroid gland contains about 200 mcg of T4 and 15 mcg of T3, but that that does not represent the amounts of thyroid hormone circulating in the blood as T4 is converted to T3. But would you say that those are the amounts of hormones produced by a healthy thyroid gland each day, and something one should aim for when on thyroid med replacement?`

omggg !!! i was sure that i was alone in this :o so does anybody else have joint pains also then ? i am 20 years old 5``6 1/2 and weigh 100lbs this is ridiculous it takes me about 4 mnths just to gain a pound or two. i eat like no tomorrow and can't gain a pound if only they had a weight gaining program for people with a metabolism as fast as us that would be awsome. I'm tired of hearing people say `oh i wish i had your body, or you have the perfect body`like geeze shut up ! i do not have a healthy weight for my height. So if there is a way to help me gain weight i most definitely will jump at that chance.

Dear Dr. Pepper,

This is a great forum! I have some questions that I hope you will be able to answer:

I was recently prescribed NTH and asked the pharmacy to give me both Armour and Erfa (I wanted to be able to compare the two). Luckily, the pharmacist agreed. So now I have been on NTH for three months and have discovered the following:

- I seem to need around 5 grains a day for optimal results and symptom relief (I used to be on 250 mcg of thyroxine)
- on 5 grains of Armour, I get more stable results than with Erfa. With Erfa, I feel slightly hyperthyroid at times, even though 5 grains of Erfa contains slightly less hormones than Armour (181 mcg of T4 and 40 mcg of T3 as compared to 192 mcg of T4 and 45 mcg of T3 in 5 grains of Armour). How is that possible?

- many reputable sites, like Stop the thyroid madness and Mary Shomon's thyroid.about.com claim that Armour was reformulated in outmost secrecy and that neither patients nor doctors or pharmacists knew anything about it. They go on to claim that it was discovered only because many patients became hypothyroid again and went back to the pharmacy to check if they had indeed been given the right drug. They even say that Forest has refused to communicate with patients. But according to what you write in a post above, "When a drug is reformulated the FDA is involved which is included in the public record. When the reformulated drug is released to the medical community that information must be updated to all prescribing medical professionals.", it would not be possible or even legal to reformulate a drug without informing anyone. So what is true???

I would not keep taking it if it was something that i felt harmed me, it is much better then taking the drag of a cigarette and getting my heart fluttering, thats exactly what it did. Did you know the nicotine faked you exercising by getting your heart rate pumping, this isnt even as bad as that I will say it was more a flutter, but when I ate before taking it, that didnt happen, they said if the belly sours to eat, that did it, but since I've also taken in on an empty one and that didnt happen. So I will continue with it then I will see if it was worth it after a month, I will not change anything else Ill keep eating well and walking as long as my nose wont freeze off, though its february and in Massachusetts we have had a very mild winter and no snow.... Hope I didnt dam myself tomorrow it will be close to 70 wow Never thought I would see that ....Debbi have all stimulants made your heart beat to fast and what happens when you work out the same thing.

Well, 5 minutes of pounding heart is enough for me not to even bother trying it. When things like that happen, I believe you shouldn't be taking it. It's just not normal. Let me know how it continues - be careful!

Debbi, Ive been taking it a bit over 1 week, now the first time I took it, the heart for about 5 minutes beat like mad, OK so it then calmed, my belly was a little bit queasy, that too calmed in 5 minutes. they indicate using it on a empty stomach, if you get queasy try it with food, so thats what I've done. I take it at 7 am then at 1:30 or 2. Although I dont have weight falling off me I do see what it is doing, its cleaning me out kind of weird as i'd not think that would have happened. I have more natural pep and I took a 10 mile walk after taking it over the weekend. So if at first you think the little heart race is to much, just give it a try it goes away after a few days your body gets used to it, there is no form of caffiene in it either. I can feel my self with a higher level of metabolism, I feel more like my old self but smokeless. GL

I was having troble with fatique, weight gain, and borderline Type 2 diabetis. In addidtion I am suffering from ED which was of sudden onset. After lab work he informed me i had Low T. My doctor put me on androgel with not much success. He switched me to a 12 week injection protocol which I didn't notice much change. After the 12 week therapy I received a call from his office that said me testosterone was within normal levels. He put me back on androgel as as a suppliment. I still see no improvement in my libido or ED issues. Should he be trying more than one type of Testosterone injection? Should I try applying the gel directly to my scrotum?

I have the exact same problem. I do have a suggestion though... Ive tried just about everything to gain weight and I hadnt saw any results until I tried yo-plait yogurt. It sounds rediculious but trust me! I eat one giant tub a day and then I load up on healthy meats like Chicken and begals. Any bread product is loaded with calories and carbs, the only problem is these foods alone wont help, Try the yogurt and make sure your daily carb and calorie intake are why higher than average and I gurentee youll see results!!! Another great help is creitine and protein drinks!!! I drink one Shake a day and it counts for 50% of my daily value of carbs! Also I have had the same problem with loosing weight as soon as I stopped eating as much. DONT! If your body is like mine, and I think it is, as soon as you stop dieting your matabolism will just destroy your efforts. Best of luck!
