Tina Sends the NY Times a Heads Up Regarding the Armour Crisis

Tina has raised her pen (actually her keyboard) to bring greater visibility to the Armour Thyroid crisis. Tina addressed her comments to one of the editors at the NY Times who actually appears to have taken this seriously and passed the email on upward. Thank you Tina, from me and those who are struggling with this unwarranted interruption in their medical treatment.

Here is the email sent by Tina to the NY Times Editor

Dear Ms. Kolata: I am writing in regard to recent restrictions on the availability of alternative, though highly effective, medications for hypothyroidism. Dessicated thyroid generics (made from the thyroid glands of pigs), known as Armour or NatureThroid, help thousands of people who suffer from low-functioning thyroids. I was on Synthroid, a synthetic thyroid medication, for years, but still suffered from symptoms. It was only when I began using NatureThroid, which treats all four of the hormone levels affected by the thyroid (vs. Synthoid, which only treats one), that my symptoms cleared up. I can’t tell you what a relief it is to no longer feel agitated and inexplicably moody, nor to have my hair falling out, my skin dry, etc. But it is becoming harder and harder to find dessicated thyroid generics. Armour, which has been around for about 50 years, is virtually out of business. Apparently the shortage has to do with FDA documentation requirements (which is odd; why now?)!
. Meanwhile, the American Academy of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE) is backing Synthroid, which makes big money for its manufacturers (i.e., Abbott Laboratories). I hope this captures your interest. I don’t know what I, or thousands of others who have found relief with dessicated thyroid generics, will do if they are no longer available. If you would like more information, it may be helpful to go to http://www.metabolism.com. Thank you very much for your attention, Tina Montalvo West Palm Beach, FL

Thank you Tina for taking the time to do this. I hope that the exposure of this crisis gets more national attention and that “the powers that be” can better explain to patients, doctors, and pharmacists alike as to how and why this happened. Thank you for doing this. Sally from New England

Thank you Tina. I have the same issue but even more serious as I don’t have a thyroid. Synthoid did not work for me at all and Armour made it possible for me to have a life. I don’t know what i will do without it. Thank you and Dr. Pepper for all your efforts to make someone who can help us aware of this crisis.

Who can we all contact to really address our outrage and concern about this very serious life issue, I did very poorly with synthroid. I was diagnosed in 1982 with Hashimoto thyroid and have been around and around trying to get well. I got Lyme disease and Babesia in 2000, at the same time I was going through menopause…..the best I ever felt was with “original” armour thyroid. I am currently taking Naturthroid…..don’t feel as well….and am not sure about future availability?????…….To what crisis with the past Armour is the government responding????? We may be doomed if proper action is not taken to protect our source of t3/t4……T3/T4 friendly doctors Please tell us what to do?

  • Tina you are the answer to all our prayers..I have been saying why can’t we get the necessary publicity to get something done about this horrific situation. YOU will be our heroine forever if, as it seems Tina will get exposure and national attention..my fingers will be crossed and my prayers said that your courageous and intelligent efforts on the behalf of soooo many people will bring forth some positive action.
    Bless you.

    Hi Tina
I have been getting my porcine thyroid from a compounding pharmacy but it is only a temporary fix as they are going to be unable to get it shortly. and i take a dose that is 90mgs one day and the next day 60.5 the next day. and believe me its getting expensive as my insurance will not pay for it.. I to was on snythroid for a long time and it never worked for me. I don’t see how they can get rid of a med that works so well for millions of people..

  • Hi Tina: I am just curious…have you received ANY kind of response from the N.Y. Times? They usually are great in promoting things that benefit the average person..Hopefully they will offer some information that will allow us to get the ball rolling so that this situation can be remedied in the interest of the people suffering and NOT the money-hungry pharmaceuticals! I will look forward to seeing their response! I really feel if we unite, we might be able to get a fair shake..because as you know, the politicos are also only interested in whether or not they will get re-elected and a big outcry could influence them in their efforts to get something done in “our” interest not theirs.

I’m not very computer savy, but I found this website and I’ve posted here…..I have a Dr who is fantastic…..knows of Broda Barnes and Dr. Teitlbaum (Fibro) and is helping his patients find Armour….However, I REALLY CAN’T BELIEVE WE HAVEN’T ALL ASSERTIVELY GOTTEN A PETITON OR SOME OTHER ACTION TOGETHER..BY NOW…….TO EVEN GET BACK TO OUR OLD ARMOUR FORMULATION….WITH ALL THE HOLISTIC M.D.’S AND THEIR PATIENTS,,,,HOW MANY DO YOU ESTIMATE ARE AFFECTED….AND THEN THERE ARE THE FAMILY AND FRIENDS OF ALL OF US…… MAKE IT A PETITION TO INCLUDE ALL CONCERNED PARTIES……WHY ISN’T THE HOLISTIC M.D.S AND ALL THEIR ORGANIZATIONS SPEARHEADING SOMETHING LIKE THIS????????

I got sick on my Armour Thyroid a year ago and have tried Compoundet, Erfa, Westthroid,Nature Throid ( that worked for 6 weeks until it also got reformulated)
and another generic type all of which made me feel like I was being poisened.
I do not know what to take anymore, nothing works for me like the old Armour did.
I have been laying on the couch for a year watching my life fall apart. To sick to take care of myself properly, to sick to work on getting a Loan Modefication, now my apartment is in foreclosure and I don’t earn enough to even rent a room. I can barely make it to my parttime job that starts at 3.00 in the afternoon. I am taking Thyroid Extract in olive oil now but still feel like crap.I feel like calling it a day… I am 58 years old and I am going to sleep on the beach with my dog due to the reformulation of Armour Thyroid.
