Thanks for the interesting list. I was wondering if it should be titled “10 most nutritious foods” rather than healthiest? The reason I suggest that is because the butter, eggs and coconut are high in saturated fats and for many people with high cholesterol many experts advise limited intake of these fats.

Gram for gram however, I imagine the overall nutritional content of these foods is very high.

    What do you think?

You make an excellent point Dr. P! However, not all cholesterol is created equal. I find that many people are not educated enough on bad cholesterol (LDL) and good cholesterol (HDL). The good cholesterol in eggs, ghee (made from butter), and coconut are made up from the cholesterol that our bodies need to maintain healthy sex organs, beautiful skin and hair amongst other health benefits. I will post the rest of that article so that it is much clearer to our readers. Thank you for the feedback! Keeps me on my toes.

    Hey Lex,

I’m going to jump in and give a bit of clarity to our members:

The cholesterol in our blood and and the fat in food are two very different things.

There are two types of cholesterol:

    1. HDL and LDL is circulates in our blood and is something that our livers produce. This does not come directly from dietary sources.

    2. Dietary cholesterol is ONLY found in animal products (so coconut doesn’t contain any) and has some, but minimal, impact on HDL or LDL.

The point that Dr. P was making (and that I agree with) is that some of the foods on the list are not entirely healthy (like ghee and egg yolks). They contain high levels of saturated fats: something that DOES influence total cholesterol and LDL.

You can have healthy sex organs, beautiful skin and hair without ever eating an egg trying ghee, or drinking coconut juice. On the contrary, the fats in these foods are likely to increase the risk of chronic disease.

So as Dr. P was saying is that there is a lot of nutrition in the foods on the list, but not necessarily the kind we want or need.

Of course, points could be made the other way as well. Millions in India live lives free of heart disease while eating ghee three meals a day. The same for coconuts in the Caribbean. This is what makes nutrition such a fascinating science, Lex!

Great reads you have on this site. Very informative. Too many people are on the total wrong track with what is healthy for you and what is not. This is a great site with expertise in clearing that up for laymen such as myself. Thank you for taking the time out. Lookin forward to additional topics. I am going to browse some more and then give more feedback on any questions that I may have pertaining to nutrition.
